Battle : This author's True Account

I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was a blue sky day with hardly a breeze. Somehow , I got myself in a real pickle with my enemy up-slope from me on the side of the mountain. As if that wasn't bad enough, he had me pinned down behind a fallen tree and was firing away so fast and with such accuracy that I didn't dare try to move, much less take the time to aim before I fired. I could feel my heart pounding in my head and the adrenaline rush was causing my hands to shake. I had to get out of there somehow. I had an idea ! It was so crazy that I really didn't think it would work, but I was desperate enough to try anything at that point. I only had a fraction of a second to look and duck but I got the info I needed. The tree he was using for cover was a tall one.

I could see the top of it clearly without risking getting hit. I set my weapon for a hard fast shot, rested the barrel on the top of the log and sighted on the top of the tree. Then I lowered the end of the barrel and took my best guess as to how far down the tree he might be standing. If this worked there would be stories to tell but if it didn't,..... I was cooked. I fired one shot and heard the smack of the round hitting something. A cry went up from his direction and then..............silence. The steady barrage of sniper fire suddenly ceased and I waited. It was so ridiculous. How could it have worked ? The sound of moaning drifted down the slope, the only sound to break that eire silence. It's a trick , I thought. There's no way I hit him. Now my heart was really racing as I finally ventured a guarded peek. He was down ! The moaning got louder and he wasn't getting up. I ran up the mountainside using every tree along the way as cover until I stood over my enemy, his rifle cast aside and a very obvious hit right square in his forehead. I couldn't believe it !

And that's the way it happened back in the days when my brother and I were enemies in the BB Gun War of the 1970 s. Yeah , that's right , BB guns. Had you going there didn't I. Well, that's the way it was for us kids back then. The excitement of battle was in our blood as kids and we didn't want to just pretend any more, we wanted to have it as real as we could without actually hurting anyone. But it turns out that bb guns aren't really a safe way to do it, as my bother could attest if he were here today. Oh, he survived that hit to his forehead alright but we were lucky. A couple of inches this way or that and it could have been his eye.

I wish that paintball had been invented while we were kids. What a blast that would have been. And my little brother did go on in later years to enjoy that sport with his friends without injury.
